I am scheduled for THR September 12th. I'm having the anterior approach. After reading some of these posts, I am terrified. I was exposed to MRSA around 2 months ago. My mother had it in her lungs. The doctor has given me a nasal antibiotic as a precaution, but I'm scared to death that something is going to go wrong with my hip replacement.

Dear Susan,
I hope everything goes well for you. I too get scared after reading some of these stores. I had a THR in 2007 that went bad and fell apart, in Sept. 2010 had a revision and felt I was doing fine. went back to work but in Feb.2011 could not walk. Had gotten MRSA from the revision. Had a clean out, went home with picc line antibiotics for 6 weeks, went back to work and then in Aug. could not work, had another clean out Sept. 8th picc line antibiotics for 6 weeks and then will have another THR that will be 4 surgery in about a year. Hope this one will work. Hope you have a clean surgery. take care.

My husband had a total hip replacement contracted MRSA in the wound. Was in the hospital 8 days on the Vancomycin, Then to a rehab facility for 18 days. He is still getting Vancomycin through his PIC line. It has been 10 weeks. His ESR was dropping steadily but has leveled off and his infectious disease Dr is worried he may have infection on the new hip. He is going to be on the Vancomycin 4-6 more weeks. If his numbers start dropping again he will be out of the woods. If not they will have to open the hip take out the new hip, put in a cement thing that has Vancomycin in it. He won't be able to bear weight on it. Then in 6 weeks they will put another new hip in. We are praying it does not come to that. MRSA is hard to kill, I wonder why so many people get it after surgery?

Diana,
So sorry to hear about your husband. I too got MRSA from THR done in Sept. 2010. Did not know about the MRSA until Feb. 2011. had a clean out and then Picc line with Vanco for 6 weeks. Went back to work but still had to take 4 antibiotics a day. Then in Aug. could not work had to have another clean out, doctor put some antibiotic beads in wound, have another Picc line with more Vanco for 6 weeks, then no antibiotics for 2 weeks then will have another THR. Yes more and more people are getting Mrsa then ever before, it is very hard to kill. It seems only way to get rid of it in a hip is to do what your husband and I are having done. I hope everything works out alright for him, and you and your family.

Hi i'm so amazed to know that mrsa is so rampant out there n hope n pray that
all ofyou affected will be out of its clutches soon. I too had mrsa n had to go
through 2 surgeries n am waiting for the final one where the implants r to be
put back. How r the hospitals n drs in australia? Are the incidences of
infections lesser?

hi sunny i live in the states, my doctor did not put spacer in because he felt my hip was too damaged. i have had 2 clean outs the last one sept. 8th vaco for 8 weeks and now another surgery date end of this month if blood looks good. how has it be with the spacers or implants?
at first i was glad i didnot get them but now i wonder if i will ever get rid of the mrsa. i would hate to have the new THR be a waste of time. i guess i will have to trust the doctor when he told me my hip was to damaged. the THR i had in 2007 fell apart and caused a fracture, so i had to have a revision and that is when i got the mrsa. i have alot of time on my hands so i have read this forum 2-3 times. some of the ones who started it no longer reply but their stories have helped me. let me know how it goes.

Hi John, thanks for replying. Yes I've got an antibiotic spacer in and
had to take 6 weeks of vanco. My spacer dislocated so that's been giving
me much pain. The thing is my surgeon still left my stem in. Tell me do
they actually remove all the implants the first time you get it? My
surgeon didnt bcoz he was trying to save it. Then it came back n I had
to do another surgery where he removed implants but stem still left in
after it was sterilised. Now I have to wait for the figures in my blood
test and see where I stand. Does this infection ever cure? I'm really
anxious about this.

Sunny, I sure hope there is a cure. my next surgery is set for Nov. 22. I go for a blood test on the 17th and if numbers look good it's a go. but if they don't then I don't know what will happen next. as for your questions i do not have any answers. the revision i had in Sept. 2010 the doc left the stem in (i think) he felt at that time that there was alot of damage to my hip caused by the failure of the very first THR. I hope everything goes good for you. knowing i have a date for surgery is good and bad, i too am very anxious.

Tonya, how did you get mrsa? was it from a hip replacement? did you have a picc line put in and a round of vacco? tell me your story. my surgery set for Nov. 22 was cancelled do to high numbers in the blood test. finally on Dec. 15th my doctor went in and did a total revision. he took everything out and started all over again. went home with another picc line and will have a round of vacco for 6 weeks. if this does not kill the mrsa i will have to stay on antibiotics from now on.

I am 58 and had a total hip replacement Dec. 20th. The drainage never stopped but after 2 weeks they took the stitches out and put on steri strips. Drainage continued and 2 weeks later they took the steri strips off and took me to ET for to restitch. I came out with a drain which fell out the next day. 72 hours later the culture showed 2 different infections, one was MRSA. I had a PICC line put in and am taking IV Gentamicin daily for 14 days to be followed by oral antibiotics for 14 days. I finished the 5th dose of Gent today and the drainage has not decreased at all. I have to change the dressing 2 to 3 times a day as it goes through the 4x4 and ABD. I do not have a fever or feel ill but am worried sick because of the copious amount of drainage. I saw the Physicians Assistant today and am to return in 3 days. They say I may have to return to OR for more surgery. Shouldn't the drainage be decreasing?

Kathy, each case is different, in my case I had a little drainage at first but then it went away and I have never had anymore. But that did not mean the mrsa was gone. I had 2 clean out surgery and then went home with picc line. On Dec. 15, 2011 had a total hip revision. Went home with picc line again, had it taken out Jan. 26. If you have read most of these post you will see that in most cases the only way to get rid of the mrsa is to have that hip taken out and a spacer put in, then another round of antibiotics until no sign of mrsa, then a hip revision. In my case doctor felt I had too much damage to my hip for that many surgeries. Read every post that Nancy R wrote. Take care John

I know all to well about MRSA in a hip replacement. In March 2011 I had a total hip replacement. Seemed to go great until MRSA and flesh bacteia set in a few days later. They removed my hip but also had to remove lots of tissue and muscle. The reconstruction they did took until Dec to heal (after many surgeries). I have been living without a hip the whole time. I go see the ortho in a week. He has already told me that there is a chance he cannot put in a new hip. If anyone ia living without a hip I would love feedback on what the quality of life is like as well as the pain. Thanks.

Nancy, so sorry to of your condition. A blood test could tell the doctors if there some kind of infection in your system. to confirm that it is mrsa they would have to take a culture of the area around or in the hip and let it grow. I would start with a blood test, keep in mind that some people, like me, have had tests that show no infection or very little and a few weeks later a test will show high levels. Read all the posts in this forum to be better informed, especially Nancy R.
I hope you get some relief soon. John

Phil, so sorry you are going through this. My doctor told me there was too much damage to my hip after the first THR went bad. He did a revision and that is when I got the mrsa. He did not want to take the hip out and put a spacer in because of the damage. I had 2 clean outs and then had another revision in Dec. 2011. So far so good. I would look around for another surgeon if you can, Nancy R who lives in Maryland tells of the doctors at Mount Sinai. read all her posts and then maybe you can get in touch with them. I don't know what kind of insurance you have so I don't know if this is an option for you. I feel so bad for you and anybody who has gone through this kind of nightmare. Hope you can find some answers. John

i was a healthy 41 year old man that lives in the US. I had a 3 year fight and 13 surgeries and numerous implants of the total hip. A uncaring doctor to interested in sports was never around to care for my treatment or Vank dose adjustments serum levels. I used 12 months of sick time it took me 26 years to accrue and finally went bankrupt. There is no recourse against negligence in the US either. I pray for those who have contacted MRSA and send my condolences for those that paid the ultimate price.

Dear Doug, I am so sorry to hear of your situation. Yes it is not fair that when someone gets mrsa at a hospital you cannot sue. I was a dept manager at a supermarket for 25 years and after a 18 month ordeal with hip revisions and mrsa, I was demoted and had my pay cut 18k a year. then on top of that they sent me to a store that was an hour and a half away. i have put my notice in and am having a hard time finding another job. you are still a young man and i pray that you will be ok.
