My 93 yr old mother was in the above hospital from the evening of 8th June for ?breathing problems & more importatntly a month-old severe skin rash. She was discharged yesterday morning (17th) & as I was wheeling her off the ward a nurse said "Oh - by the way, she's got MRSA." According to the discharge letter she'd started treatment that very morning. I was going to take her to a pub for lunch with friends before taking her to her care home but went straight to the care home, who had been alerted the previous evening about the MRSA. A visitor has told me that a nurse mentioned MRSA on the 9th but I, her son, wasn't informed. I had noticed on the 11th (?) that the scratch marks where she's been scratching her shoulders were yellow so I told the nurses that they looked infected. Had she picked up MRSA then? Apart from the MRSA I am horrified by other things I saw whilst visitng mother. Getting information was difficult & nurses seemed not to know & waffled. I asked about t... read more |

My mother has bladder cancer and has been to the hospital several times in the last 9 months, where she has had to stay at the hospital for at least 3 days, one time last september she was in for nearly 3 weeks because she had a small stroke. The first time where she was there for the 3 weeks they found out that she had MRSA in her nose, she was treated with cream up her nose, followed up with swabs being taken when she came home. She was admitted recentley in Maj, where we were again told that she had MRSA up her nose again. As she was only in the hospital for 3 days, I gave her the cream up her nose everyday untill the treatment was finshed. She lives in a kind of warden assisted flat. I live in Denmark, as I am the only one of my mothers children who does´nt work, this is because I´m an pensionist because of illness. I travel to England everytime she has been taken ill or if she has to go in for any tests, as she normally can´t come home if she is alone. I do this gladley but my ... read more |

Our son was born on 21st May and immediately admitted to the Special Care Unit as he was a low birth weight and refusing to feed, resulting in hypoglycemia and dehydration. At 5 days we were told that a colonisation of MRSA had been found on his skin and in his throat and he was moved to an isolation room and barrier nursed. At the time there was a possibility that the bacteria had entered his blood stream through his heel which had become very infected following all the heel pricks he had been subjected to. But, after observing him for 5 days the hospital staff decided that he was well and we were discharged to continue his treatment at home. We were given a skin wash to use day for 5 days and nasal drops. We have now been through this process twice as the colonisation remains on his skin, and today we were informed that he is still positive following his latest swabs. We are now in the position that no one in the health care team looking after him seem to know what to do. ... read more |

I was first infected with MRSA whilst in hospital for a incisional hernia repair (2001). The wound burst and drained continually for several months. The repair was not successful and had to be repeated 2 years later. Again, I was infected with MRSA with exactly the same happening again. In June 2006 I developed an abcess on the scar left by the previous operations. This burst and then another abcess developed. As an abcess healed another one would appear. My GP prescribed various antibiotics but they did not have any effect. Eventaully he referred me to the surgeon who had done the original operation (Nov 2006). He decided to investigate under anaesthetic. He actually excised flesh down to the mesh that he had put in the repair the hernia leaving a huge open wound. MRSA was found in an abcess on the mesh. At a later date he removed most of the mesh as it was preventing any healing. I am still attending hospital monthly. The large open wound has healed but there remain ... read more |

Please sign the petition at www.cdiff-support.co.uk to support us to ask for action against the infection CLOSTRIDIUM DIFFICILE - that is affecting many people that go into hospital, not enough is being done to eradicate this infection from our hospitals. Treatment of us and our loved ones affected by it is far from consistent and in some cases even inadequate. Many are dying. Cases of Clostridium difficle are increasing every year. We need this reversed. |

My friend's mother passed away from pancreatic cancer this past month. She contracted mrsa in the hospital during her treatment. She came home from the hospital for one week before being transfered to the Hospice Home. While at home she had repeated diarreah in her bed that had no plastic covering on it. She was wearing a depend but it wasn't contained to them. After her passing away, our friend has offered her bedroom furniture to us including her bed. I am fearful of taking it. Should I be? Is the bacteria living in the mattress? Thank you for any help. |

Hi all, I had a "open chole-cystectomy" 3 weeks ago (gall bladder removed via large incision the old fashioned way) and came out of hospital 2 weeks back. The hygeine standards in the hospital were appaling and post op I ended up with a dose of C-Diff. I was discharged still having that infection, and a week later, noticed a discharge from my wound and reddening & swelling etc... I returned to hospital and was told I had a "post op infection" and given a strong dose (2grammes a day) of fluxocillin antibiotics (oral). On this return, for the first time, they swabbed the wound site. They didnt say why and I thought no more of it. Went to my GP practice nurse 4 days letter for a dressing change to be told i have "MRSA" and now embarking on a 2 week course of a different anti-biotic. (as they say the lab report says the strain is resistent to fluxocillin). Was wondering if anyoone out there could give me any pointers of the timescale of recovery and any idea of what t... read more |

I think it shocking to read the recent C-Diff rates in the vale Of Leven Hospital , Wendy Alexander The Scottish labour Leader called for an independent inquiry into the outbreak thought to be Scotland's worse . Hugh Pennington , professor of bacteriology of Aberdeen University said " This horrendous death rate - that's an appropriate word to use - requires explanation . |

I have done a quick search but can't find what I'm looking for, I apologise if my question has already been answered. I had a laminectomy 12 weeks ago, the wound had self disolving sutures, I was sent home without a dressing. The wound was very painful (which you would expect from such an op) areas were moist and discharging. I made 3! trips to the practice nurses at my clinic, all dismissed my concerns To cut along story short I ended up at NHS 24 late one night feeling unwell. I was sent back to my GP who took a swab and was phoned a week later to confirm MRSA. I had 3 courses of Doxycycline. The wound is now closed, but still doesn't feel right. At this moment my operation seems to have failed, I have more pain now then before. I'm tired of asking questions that the professionals can't or won't answer. If the wound has healed, does this mean the MRSA is gone? Could the MRSA have tracked down into the surgical site? If so what symptoms would I have. There is a ve... read more |

Hi there, I am writing a feature for My Weekly magazine on MRSA in the community and I’m looking to source a case study to accompany the feature. Ideally this would be a woman (ideally over 40) who'd contracted MRSA in the community and overcome it. However, if this is too specific a request, it would be great to find a case study of a woman who beaten MRSA that she contracted from a hospital instead. The interview could be done over the phone or by email, but it would only take a few minutes so it shouldn’t be too time consuming. I’d also need the case study to send me a picture (which would be used approximately passport sized on the page). If you are interested, please email me on amy.fetzer@amyfetzer.com. Thank you! If you’d like to see other similar features I’ve written for My Weekly to give you an idea of how the case study would appear on the page, please visit my website: www.amyfetzer.com. Some similar articles that I've written for My Weekly can be found... read more |

Hospital Scientist Stole Bacteria To Kill Herself, Panel Told Louise Radnofsky and agencies guardian.co.uk, Friday February 22 2008 Article history [“A biomedical scientist stole bacteria from the hospital where she worked in order to end her life by giving herself septicaemia, it emerged today. Jennifer Bainbridge removed the bacteria - found in MRSA and E coli germs - from North Tyneside general hospital, a health regulator panel heard last week. The 28-year-old said she planned to use the germs to kill herself when she "hit rock bottom" after suffering months of depression. "I was basically going to give myself septicaemia," she told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "I just took what was available in the lab, but I made sure they were organisms which were not going to put anyone else at risk." At the last minute, she changed her mind and told her managers what she had done. She was suspended from her job last July and dismissed last month. "Even thinki... read more |

Whilst appreciating the cencern that joe public has, I do feel that the public has to take some responsibility e.g. patients are reluctant to take responsibility in there own hygiene needs when they are able and visitors need to be aware of their hygiene needs when visiting their relatives. Due to the media and government alot of the blame and focus is on the NHS and not many people are aware that the bug is being brought in from the community. |

Good evening! Today I just found out my uncle has MRSA in the blood and the hospital never told us until after we were all hugging and kissing him. I'm very concerned because I have a 5 yr old and a 7month old to come home too. My mom never washed her hands after leaving the hospital last night and decided to kiss my kids and share a drink with my son. I'm very concerned for him. Please tell me my kids are going to be okay! I mean we all had contact with him and the kids without knowing what he had. How long does it take for you to know you have this stuff? Is my mom at risk for kissing him? My son's doctor said its a waiting game but arent there tests to know for sure if the kids would have it instead of letting it get worst? SHould I call and speak with someone else in the office? What can we all do now that we didnt take precautions with my uncle? He is in bad shape. |

My husband has mrsa under antibotics for the last almost six years. We are trying to get started on probiotics and yogurt. I had an abscess on my real, then hubby got a swollen gland under neck, and then I got a swollen gland in my groin. My husband isn't getting much better, I am (off and on). Has anyone experienced someone being so sick, glands swelling? We are going to try some cleansing and detox stuff from the Health Food Stores next. |

I was diagnosed with MRSA in July 2005 after a stay in hospital after an operation. I have now been told that I am clear of the infection yet I now suffer with stomach cramps and lethargy. The worst sympton is that I seem to be suffering from depression, something I have NEVER had a problem with. Everyday routine is a struggle. I used to be confidetn and extrovert. Is this possibly an after effect of this disease or does it stay in your system for ever? |
