I am a GP and have a pateint with vaginal MRSA. I have discussed it with a range of clinical colleagues but no-one has any real answers. This lady has a vaginal ring pessary in place which I am sure is exacerbating the situation but she cannot really do without it. Any ideas anyone? 4448

Bev I have to agree what hope have we got when the Dr's now turn to us . I suggest that the G.P gets in touch with the DOH and patricia Hewitt who would love to hear his plight. 4459

I do not wish to be disrespectful but being totally cynical it now becomes more clear why MRSA is the patients' and visitors' responsibility; we have not been furnishing the qualified medical professionals with the correct information. Lord Warner suggested on GMTV that my son's contraction of MRSA could have been introduced by means of the titanium pins used during his surgery being unsterile. Could an unsterile vagina ring have been the cause of infection in this lady? 4462

no - they are pre-packed sterile products. Vaginal mrsa comes off the perineal skin after it has been touched. Betadine will kill it stone dead, mrsa is a type of bacteria after all. 4463

The implication of #9 is "MRSA is [only] a type of bacteria after all" and therefore easily treatable. It is surprising that it is so difficult to deal with if that is actually the case. 4476

Bev: there are many iodine based dressings that are indeed used for mrsa infected wounds Ruth: it can only be used where no tissue penetration is needed, so can't be used for serious, invasive, disease 4477

iodosorb ?? and forgive me seemingly coming over as dense but if many iodine based dressings are used for treating MRSA infected wounds then why are there then so many fatalities from MRSA and so many more being left crippled by it would you not mean that some strains of MRSA wound infections are treated by iodine based dressings you mentioned no tissue penetration needed surely a wound is already tissue penetrated by defination of wound - broken skin - break down of skin - infection of skin is a break down in the tissue ?? could i respectfully ask how you know this information ? 4478

Bev - Q1. they are used supplementary to actual antibiotics if a deeper infection is present. If the mrsa is on the surface (including a broken surface) the iodine can reach it. Q2. professionally 4484

thankyou would that mean then if i had an open wound but came into contact with someone suffering from MRSA then i would be better armed with putting betadine or iodosorb on my wound to prevent contracting MRSA ??? 4485

At risk of being expelled from the Hoots.....I have downloaded the info Andrew Platt sent. His blurb suggests that Prontoderm would do the job. Maybe this unfortumate lady could be treated to a free sample from Mr Platt and we can then have some feedback from Joe Public rather than just the lab testings that we have thus far? 4490

Kieran - There is a great website from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. They have an interactive question and answer forum for doctors only. (You can read the questions and answers as a layperson, but you can only ask questions if you are a doctor. I want to commend you for searching all resources to find out about your patient's problem. I wish the surgeon who operated on my children were as concerned with their health. 4510
