Any HELP please??

My husband has had acute pancreatitis post ercp to remove gallstones, they could not remove the stones and put a stent in place to drain the bile duct. He has a lot of underlying health problems, ie COPD, Polycythemia (thick blood) to mention only 2. The surgeon had to drain the large pseudocyst that had formed and then ruptured, after his attack of pancreatitis, he placed a drain into the pancrease, and used a lavage wash for several days. He was discharged from hospital with the drain in place, draining any fluid into a Stoma bag, the bag was filling up ok until about a week ago, and he complained that the WOUND area around the drain was very painful. I had a look and it wasvery red and had a lot of puss coming out of the wound (Not the drain) GP did a swab on Thursday 27th march, and gave him antibiotics, but he did not improve, Phoned GP again on Monday 1st March, she had one look at the wound site and said he should just go to A & E , so we did this My husband was taken in to hospital, had his drain flushed, and swabs taken, He was feeling ok, although his temp was going up and down, GP the phoned my home on Tuesday 2nd March to say that he had MRSA on the wound and that she would contact the hospital. He was removed to a seperate room, but today is WED 3 march and they are still trying to decide which anibiotic to give him and they said that he may be home in 2 DAYS, i am very concerned that the infection may have got into the open wound, but how long would this take to show up on any tests that they do ie. bloods swabs, ect? They have just started him tonight (wed 3rd march) and they say they might let him go home with tablets to continue, has anyone else been discharged so quickly? or is this normal and i am being paranoid about things that MIGHT happen Thanks Carolyn

Dear Caroline , it usually take 3 days for swab results for mrsa ,other bacteria & fungi take longer to culture . i would take it to be the hospital are waiting on there own lab results coming back before they treat your husband , why they do this, i dont know considering your own GP would have faxed the results to them as the lab results would state what antibiotic to give him . Caroline im having difficulty reading your post you state .......... (but today is WED 3 march and they are still trying to decide which anibiotic to give him )and then you state...... (They have just started him tonight )by saying this are you meaning he is on iv antibiotics ? and sending him home with tablets to continue ? please get back to us Caroline & let us know how your husband is doing , hopefully by the time you read this the hospital lab results will be back & you will be able to give us an update , my best wishes .

Carolyn, when was your husband last screened for MRSA. I assume that he was screened before he went into hospital, (swiped the nostril with a swab). It may be that he is now colonised with MRSA from our hospitals, (IE the bugs are ON not in his body. Infection is when they get into the wound which sounds like the present status. always good to have the body de-colonised. If you want free information, contact me on mrsa@support@gmail.com Our charity provides a free service of supplying basic information and how to de-colonise the body.
