Symptoms of MRSA/Life Long Conditon?

My father is a regular visitor to hospital due to a heart condition and COPD(lung disease). He was admitted to hospital 2 days ago with breathing difficulties, however, today (25/03/05) we have been informed they have identified MRSA bug in his blood. He his been moved to a side room, but at the moment he has no symptoms of illness e.g. temperature and appears quiet well. Could anyone tell me what symptom's we have to look out for and what the future holds with this bug, does is remain in your system for the remainder of the person's life? Many thanks Tracy Allman 2066

Tracy, Sorry to hear that you Dad has tested positive for MRSA; I lost my Dad to MRSA a year ago today. Although many of us posting on this site have lost a loved one to MRSA, there are equally many people posting who have survived MRSA, so I hope that gives you some optimism. I can only speak from my personal experience, but looking back now the only symptoms Dad displayed at the time he was diagnosed with MRSA (we were not told for 10 days) were breathing problems. His MRSA was diagnosed from his sputum. I don't recall him having a temperature and it wasn't until his condition deteriorated that he truly seemed unwell. As for whether the infection stays with you I am unsure. Dad had MRSA twice. The first time in summer 2002 he was apparently clear of MRSA before he was discharged from hospital. He was also tested on other hospital admissions over the next 18 months, and all but the last admission showed he was clear. But since his death, the hospital where he was treated have suggested that the MRSA may have colonised him at such low levels as to be undetectable - in effect they are suggesting that he could have in fact have had MRSA from summer 2002 right up until his death on 25 March 2004. We will never know if this is the case, and being cynical I think it is possibly the hospital not wanting to admit that he managed to catch MRSA twice on their wards. If you have a read through other postings on here there are plenty of people who have suffered from MRSA but are now all-clear, so one can only conclude from that, that the bug can be eradicated from the system and does not remain for the remainder of the persons life. Hope this helps a little. And best wishes to you and your Dad. 2069

Before James was diagnosed as MRSA positive, he suffered several bouts of extremely high fever (106) and pain in the back of the knee. He was treated with paracetamol for about 4 days. The wound site was red and inflamed and was generally sore but in between the high fevers, he was generally OK. Once diagnosed was put into isolation and was on very high levels of morphine to combat the pain as well as teicoplanin to address the MRSA. He is tested each time before admission to hospital and has always been clear. 2071

Tracey, We lost my Stepfather to MRSA on the 27/12/03 and even though the hospital knew he had the infection, they never informed his wife that he had it.We obtained his medical notes, along with all the lab reports, doctors notes, prescription notes, etc. From these notes we have been able to recount my Stepfathers condition during the last 7 days of his life whilst he had these infections(he had MRSA in at least 3 places, but we suspect 2 other places we believe he had it in). During yhose last 7 days,my Stepfather showed no outwardly visible symptems of the infection to begin with, but we have noted that they were giving him paracetomol on a regular basis ove those 7 days.Parocetomol is used by the doctors to try and lower a persons temperature,as they seem to have done with Ruths son James, but as with Ruths son James,my Stepfathers temperature started to rise and on his last day alive reached 105.5 degrees. His temperature rose over the last 48 hours of his life from a normal temperature up to 105.5 so it was rather quick. MRSA can still be treated very sucssessfully with Tiecoplanin.Vancomyocin,Zyvox,synercid,Daptomycin.So as you can see there are Antibiotics that can treat MRSA,and it can be cured. 2100

Di, Please, please go straight back to your GP or hospital to get this checked out. MRSA aside, there is obviously something not quite right here and you really must get medical attention a.s.a.p. If you can't speak to a doctor tonight, could you call NHS Direct as a starting point? Good luck. 2522

Some of the drip fluid will have likely leaked into the skin of your hand and caused a chemical irritation. 5113

Nooh - what you describe could definately be an infection - this could be serious if left untreated. Please go and see a doctor and have this investigated further. Have yu had any samples taken to determine what is causing the kidney infection? 21576

I developed MRSA after having a right hip replacement. The incision didn't heal right and had wound about 3 inches long and an inch deep. I took me 4 weeks with a wound vac to get rid of the problem. However, I have been told by my infectious disease doctor than once you have MRSA you always have MRSA, it just lies dormant after the antibiotic is in your system for 2 weeks. I was told that if I have any further surgeries that I need to inform them that I had MRSA so they can take extra precautions. I felt fine and had no syptoms except the seeping wound. They took a culture in the wound and in each nostril as well as a blood test to make sure I was MRSA free before I could go back to work. 22021

Recently my mother was diagnosed again with reoccuring MRSA and was told she will have it for the rest of her life and will have to take antibiotics for the rest of her life. She first was diagnosed with MRSA back 2006 after having back surgery. She had to have 2 additional surgeries due to MRSA. She was placed on antibiotics for about a year and was told it was no longer in her body, but recently she had a boil that grew and leaked pus for her surgery site and went to a surgeon and they removed it and sent for testing and found out her MRSA has returned. My question is are there anyone out there who has had a similar case and what was the treatment options and the out come of the person with MRSA. 22933

After I gave birth to my baby boy in march 2008, I was back in the hospital 3 days later with a fever of 104. later they told me that I had got mrsa, and it was in my blood. They didnt realize for 4 days, treating me with different things through the IV. They almost sent me to another hospital. They finally got my fever down and released me after 5 days there. I went back to the hospital a couple days ago with an infection on my leg, and found out it was mrsa. They said I would have it for the rest of my life, and to not shave anymore (use nair). They said any little nick or cut that I get has a very good chance of getting infected with mrsa. I was wondering can I give this to my husband when we have sex? If I have another child will they automatically have it? I'm trying to prove that I got it from the hospital so I can file a claim, but I'm not sure how to prove it. Except for the fact that I left the hospital and went straight home and didnt go anywhere, so the hospital has to be the place where I got it. Nobody in my family has it. If someone could please help answer some of my questions I would really appreciate it. 23198

I had my appendix taken out almost two years ago and went straight home after the surgery. After a short while I started to feel sick and my wound was not healing. Also I started breaking out in other spots with what looked like little pimples. I went to my doctor and she said it must be spider bites. Only problem is the bites didn't go away. I went back to my Doctor and she but my on a mild antibiotic. The small spots turned into large wounds. Frantic I called my doctor she said I've thrown every antibiotic at you and I don't know what more to do for you I went to the emergency room. Finally after months of this they told me it was MRSA and put me on an IV. They told me it was community acquired. Because of not wanting to make the hospital liable they are probably told to tell everyone that. Good thing they got me out of the hospital quickly so that the infection I got there didn't have time to fester. Good reason to get patients out of the hospital and home so the hospital can say it was community acquired MRSA! I was only 50 years old and I had been healthy all my life. So from now on I have to worry about a decreased immune system. 23806

I remember going to visit my brother in the hospital after having his toe removed. Then he was moved to retirement home for a infection I was told. He was given a IV med and was there for 2 weeks and wanted to come home. They kept him about a month longer due to other issues and released him. I wondered why he had to stay there and now after doing all this reading on MRSA and now having it myself I know why he was there. I started with a pimple on my chest and it got worse in 1 week when to the Dr. it was getting better and now starting to bleed and clot. Going back to the Doc on monday. Wish me luck in my fight with this messed up killer. 24356
